Spirituality and Science: A Reintegration
Nov 4, 2010
Are we the products of blind biological and chemical forces, leading meaningless lives, in a meaningless world? Or are we spiritual beings, in a chemical body, electrically stimulated and emotionally controlled? In the ancient world, spirituality and science were integrated. About 1700 years ago, that integration began to fracture and by the 1600s our understanding of reality was split into two components: the spiritual and the material.
Now, advances in quantum physics, anthropic cosmology, consciousness studies, parapsychology, and spirituality have begun to heal that split. The conclusions from research in these areas are shifting our current paradigm away from materialism toward spirituality, which is an interconnection with all reality. The evidence for this comes from research in telepathy, clairvoyance or remote viewing, precognition, psychokinesis, psychic healing, out-of-body experience, near death experience, postmortem survival, mediumship, reincarnation, and mystical experiences.
In his talk with us, Rev. Gary W. Duncan focuses on scientific evidence that supports that we are spiritual beings living in a spiritual world that has meaning; and supports that we have the ability to alter our destiny through imagination, desire, willpower, and intention. This new perspective of nature offers hope, light, and the affirmation that objective reality is reflected in the divine within and around us.
With backgrounds in spirituality and science, for over three decades Gary has forged these two areas together into a holistic paradigm: one supporting the other. He has conducted independent research in consciousness studies, psychic phenomena, western esoteric traditions, and sexology. He has taught many subjects, including English, mathematics, psychology, sociology, Western and Eastern esoteric traditions, reincarnation, the soul, death and dying, near death experience, parapsychology, transpersonal psychology, dream work, the Gnostic religion, spirituality, sexology, and sacred and esoteric sexuality. He also spent 21 years in private practice as a psychotherapist, counselor, and sex therapist. He currently is on the faculty of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University.
Gary is also an ordained Gnostic Catholic priest; has authored the book Twin Souls Merging and a coming book on mysticism, as well as numerous academic papers and magazine articles; and is in the process of writing both a novel and a book on holistic spirituality.
