Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit paleontologist, priest and mystic worked to understand evolution and faith, and is considered one of the foundational voices in the eco-spirituality movement inspiring leaders like Thomas Berry, Jean Houston, Barbara Marx Hubbard and Matthew Fox. Born
He was born May 1, 1881, and died on April 10, 1955. Between these days Teilhard fully participated in a life that included priesthood, living and working in the front lines of war, field work exploring the early origins of the human race, and adventurous travels of discovery in the backlands of China.
Teilhard developed his imaginative, mystical writings on the evolutionary nature of the world and the cosmos. His concept of the Noosphere, representing the envelope of consciousness around the Earth, is considered to be a foreshadowing of the development of the Internet. He combined his scientific expertise with his spiritual experiences to propose that the goal of human evolution is convergence toward a future Omega Point.
Teilhard experienced decades of censorship with all of his 13 books. They were suppressed from publication by his Jesuit order and by the Vatican until after his death in 1955. His heresies stemmed from attempts to reconcile his scientific training and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
He was effectively exiled to China for more than two decades where he pursued his career in paleontology and participated in the discovery of Peking Man, a major breakthrough in the science of human evolution.
In China Teilhard met and fell in love with Lucile Swan. Their chaste ,but passionate affair continued for years, paradoxically fueling the flames of his devotion to God, while leaving her heartbroken and incomplete. Lucile was one of half a dozen women that Teilhard shared intense relationships with over the course of his lifetime including his cousin Marguerite with whom he corresponded during WWI. The inspiration and support of these women was vital to his personal evolution.
His mother inspired his precocious childhood sense of spirituality, resulting in a lifelong devotion to Jesus and Mother Mary. His cosmic religious philosophy arose from transcendental experiences as a stretcher bearer and chaplain in the trenches during World War I. Miraculously, Teilhard risked his life in over 80 battles, but never had a single wound or day of illness. It was in this cauldron of spiritual turmoil that he began his most influential writings about the Cosmic Christ who he experienced in a mystic transcendent vision.
Many quotes will be shared during the talk including his most popular one: “Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”
